SIOTO & Safety Always

Overhead Dangers
By Matthew Mark

If you're looking up towards the sky its not underdog you need to watch for.  All too often many operators neglect to fully realize what dangers lurk ABOVE their units and what can happen.   Some of the most common overhead dangers are Roof overhangs, Utility lines and tree branches.  I'll take a brief moment to explain a few hazards associated with each.

Roof Overhangs:  We've seen videos of people jumping off their roofs onto the tops of units and while that is definitely dangerous, it can be prevented by placing the unit far enough away so that the stunt is not attempted. Roof overhangs can also risk causing damage not only to the unit, but possibly gutters and downspouts as well.  The unit deflates, catches the overhang, tears, and now your unit is unserviceable. Or you pay for for a new section of gutter.  Winds blowing on the unit may cause the top to move back and forth against the structure rubbing the material and damaging it.  Its just not worth the risk.

Utility Lines create another hazard thats unique.  I've seen units with lines directly overhead.  What happens if a line drops on the unit?  Cable tv goes out, phone goes out, OR, a live electrical wire burns the unit, shocks participants and we all know how badly the outcome of that can be.  Could you imagine the look on your face if you deflated a castle or other unit and the corner spire or decoration came down on a wire, pulling that wire down?  Priceless.  Actually it'd cost you quite a bit.

Tree branches:  Same thing, wind blows, branches rub on the unit or the unit gets caught on the branches puncturing or rubbing a hole in it.  Snags the branch, gets caught, unit deflates, tree branch gets broken, homeowner is upset and your unit is damaged.  Not to mention all of these items attract lightning.

So in a nut shell, if you set the unit up, and and any of these circumstances are possible, then the unit needs to be placed in a safer location.  With a good site inspeection you should be able to keep the customer happy and safe.  Everyone appreciates safety, so if properly explained they will understand why it can't "Be over there".

Business & Marketing Advice

How to draw visitors to your site
By Jose Lopez, www.lasemadness.com

Search engines are the directories of the web and the way unsolicited visitors and prospects will find your website. You probably know from your own web searches that there is a huge advantage to having your site appear at the top of the listing of search results.

There are a hundreds of services that supposedly guarantee top placement in dozen of search engines, but you are better off doing it yourself. A number of these services use techniques, which will get your site black listed by the search engines and the “affordable” ones that submit your site to “hundreds” of search engines aren’t worth the money.

I have used the following method to get into Google fairly easy but first I will break it down in an easy format to make it enjoyable to put into quick use.

Keywords
These are the words pairs or phrases you think potential clients will use to find your site. For example, “moon bounce” and “Party Inflatable” are two keywords that people will use to find your site.

Title tag
This is the name of your home page that appears at the top of a browser when a page is displayed. Most search engines place primary importance on the words included in this html tag. If you name your page “home” that is the word many search engines will use to sort your page. Instead you will want to use a phrase that includes your keywords.

Meta tags
Meta tags are html tags that don’t show up on your web pages but are read by some search engines. The Meta tag description tag can be used to control the description of your site that appears next to your page listings in these top search engines. Example
<META NAME =”DESCRIPTION” CONTENT = “We provide the best moon bounce and party inflatables”>

Meta keyword tag
Meta keyword tag is your bread and butter; this is where your site will slide to the top and rank high at the search engines. Here is an example of how your Meta keyword tags should look like <META NAME =”KEYWORDS” CONTENT = “moon bounce, party inflatables, moon walk, jumpers, party reservations.”> Anytime someone does a search they use keywords to find a website. They might even use the keywords I have listed here. If you have these in your website you will have a chance to be found. Now you see how important this tag can be?

Page text
Search engines scan the text on your web pages and sort them according to the presence of common words. The search engines rank pages based on complex algorithms that determine whether your chosen keywords density falls into realistic parameters. Repeating your keywords over and over again will get your site de-listed from the search engines. On the other hand, if your features information about “party inflatable” and “Moon bounce” it is only logical that this phrase would appear a number of times in the first few paragraphs of the page.

I've been doing online marketing for over 17 years and I don't really like to promote other marketers product but this one is very effective and it works. This software is a short cut into the search engines. I highly recommend it for the inflatable business owners fighting for that # 1 spot

There’s nothing more rewarding then to hear a caller say “I found you in the internet, I did a Google search and found your site at the very top.”

The inflatable business is tough one but very rewarding if you have the right elements in place. Done right it can replace your day job.

Marketing With Little Or No Budget

By AJ Wright

We've all been there. Just starting out our business and we've just about spent all we have in getting our inflatables, insurance and other things to get going. Now we need the business to keep the business. But how and where do we advertise when the traditional advertising costs so much?

Simple. Hit the streets and tell your story. And there are lots of ways to tell your story. Here's just a few ideas to get you started.

Flyers: Add a couple of pictures of your units, make sure you have one with someone smiling and having fun with your units. Include all relevant information. Like phone number and website address. And make plenty of copies. Ask your boss at your day job if you can 'borrow' the copier or ask a local printer to make copies. In the long run that will be much cheaper than making all the copies on your home computer.

Put your Flyers up anywhere that Mom's, Dad's and Children will see it. Try grocery stores, the local post office, Wal Mart and bank entrances. Where I used to operate there was a bank that allowed posting of events and flyers inside the entrance way to their bank. I got a half dozen calls off of that location in one year. And post offices worked well too.

Also put flyer's under windshield wipers in parking lots. You can target mini vans, and SUV's with car seats or other things that give you the impression that it is a mom's car. You'll occasionally get run out of a parking lot by a security guard in a golf cart and some lonely soul who needs a life will call to complain that you're ruining the environment, but the results are usually worth the time and energy and hassle.

Door hangers on Doorknobs. When your target is geographically defined, print doorknob-hangers and hang them on doors in your area. This is great way to get your business name and contact information into the hands that matter most. Results will be decent. And the cost is low. Print flyers or door hangers and hit the streets. You can even get neighborhood kids to do this for you in exchange for setting up a block party.

T-Shirts: Have a t-shirt made with a picture of your units on the front and your website on the back. You can do this very cheaply at CafePress.com. I've had t-shirts made there and I wore them every chance I got. It is cheap advertising. Make sure you wear it when grocery shopping or going to Wal Mart. The places families will see you in your shirt.

Tell Your Story: Everywhere you go you run into different people. Tell them who you are and that you've just started a business. Hand out cards. And be generally excited. Create your own word of mouth. It will work wonders.

Night Time Silhouettes: This takes bit of planning but it will do you wonders. Get a good picture of your units and use a program on your computer to ad your website and phone number. Have the picture made into a slide and pull out that old slide projector from the basement or closet. Find a blank wall on a well traveled area in your town or neighborhood. Then talk to the owner of that business, building or home and the person that owns the property across the street. And set up the projector right before the sun goes down and leave it for a couple of hours.

No one does night time silhouettes anymore. This will create buzz about your business. You should only do it a couple of days once a month or so. And change out pictures each time. I know it sounds strange, but you're trying to find ways to advertise that don't cost much money. This is one way.

Boing Boing Amusements

This Newsletters edition Member Spot Light is Boing Boing Amusements!!! Boing Boing Amusements owned by Anthony and Wendy Hall is based in Murfreesboro TN and started in August 2006. They have 26 items for rent. Inflatable wise they have 13 units that can be configured 20 different ways. Boing Boing also offers, wet and dry slides, moonwalks, obstacle courses, combos, slip & slide, inflatable baseball and basketball, gladiator joust, cotton candy, pucker powder, sno-kone, popcorn, tables and 10x10 tents. They offer discount plans for schools and churches, they get 10% off rentals!

Anthony works in the Information Technology Department of a Corporation and his beautiful wife Wendy is a Kindergarten Teacher, they have a little one who seemed to have fun at last years Meet and Greet at TGI Fridays. Now to me that seems like a busy kind of life but they took on the challenge of owning Boing Boing because they wanted to do something that would bring in some extra cash and did not want to spend a fortune starting a business. Anthony and Wendy have friends that were renting Inflatable’s for their children's parties and Wendy is a teacher so they had a clientele base that they could build from. It has worked out pretty well so far. Sales are up!!!!!! Good Job!!!!

Like I said they did attend IAAPA 07 in Orlando and here is what they said about the show. “We went to the 06 and 07 shows. Orlando was much better! It was overwhelming. We did not get through it all in 3 days. I already have our hotel booked for this year. I can't wait for it to be in Vegas in 09!” Plus its Off Season Time for them in which they rest, check the forum, Anthony does the honey-do's, fly radio controlled airplanes and hunt.

Boing Boing has several vendors that they buy from and have had good service from. They are Bouncing Angels, eInflatables, Ninja Jump and Cutting Edge Creations that we purchased through Inflatable USA. Boing Boing also has purchased some used equipment that was made by HEC and Happy Jump. They have been very pleased with the durability of all that we have. But Anthony does admit “I do my research on the forum before buying something new.”  That is great; Thank You to everyone who helps out on equipment research!

The Goal of the Company is: to be able to go full-time at it and provide a comfortable living for the family.  Be sure to check out Boing Boing’s Website at www.boingboinginflatables.com

Dragon Dragsters & Spin Soaker

Whirlwhims has done it again!  Bill keeps us rolling along with a brand new game called Dragon Dragsters.  I first saw and played the game at IAAPA and was instantly a kid at heart again.  If he would have charged me for each time I played, I'd be broke and he'd be retired now.  This is truly a multiple player game that will attract attention no matter where its set up.  Players pump up their dragsters for 15-20 seconds, adjustable to make it easy or hard and then ready, set, go and away they rumble 14 feet to the finish line.  Electronic drag racing starter lights and finish line winner for great effects.  Then he's all wet yet again with his new Spin Soaker.  Connects to a standard 3/4 inch garden hose, players spin the disc, if it lands on your color you push the activator and 1 to 2 players at random get a good soaking.  Its wheel of fortune meets water.  Who can get the wettest, or who can stay the dryest?  If you do games, you need to add these.  And in true Whirlwhims fashion, they are both durable and portable as well as fun.  Check out the forums sponsor section for more info, and visit www.whirlwhims.com in April for full details!
