On and Around Site Hazards
By: Tammie Mason
In the past 2 newsletters we
discussed overhead and underground hazards. In this issue we
will conclude our 3 part series we will discuss what you need to
look for on and around the location your units will be placed.
When you arrive at the rental
site, before you unload your units, take the time to look over
the area. Start at one corner of the setup area and walk in a
straight line to the next corner. Move over a couple of steps
and slowly walk back to the other side. Continue this for the
entire setup area, looking for anything on the ground that may
be hazardous to participants or your unit. Remember even the
smallest rock or twig can tear your tarp or unit when it rubs
for several hours. So DON’T LEAVE ANYTHING on the setup area.
The area around your unit is
just as important as the actual setup area. The more clearance
you have around that unit, the better. SIOTO recommends twice
the height of the unit. Always be prepared for the worse case
scenario. If for any reason the unit collapses or tips,
participants trying to exit the unit will not be injured by
hazards around the area. Make sure you do not setup close to
pools or other standing water sources, trees, gardens, toys,
fences, clotheslines, or other permanent structures.
If
you take your time, pay close attention to the rental site and
surroundings, and use common sense, you should be able to avoid
most if not all on and around site hazards.

Business & Marketing Advice |
Small Fry Marketing!
By Matthew Mark
No, I'm not talking about french fries, I'm
talking about small fries, you know, the
little kids we service. Lets face it,
for a lot of folks smaller children are our
bread and butter. Why shouldn't anyone
in this business want to take a more
proactive marketing stance with them?
They may not write the check but they sure
do influence the purchasing decision.
A few small
ideas should help get you started on your
campaign. Lets start with a couple of
the most obvious places. Daycares.
If you can get into daycares then that's the
up and coming market segment you want to
target as they are going to be right at that
age for rentals over the next few years.
Offer a bounce at a reduced rate during the
week or for special parties and once inside,
market your company. Don't just
deliver a bounce and leave, work the crowd.
When I say work
the crowd, I mean talk to everyone, give
them all a card, make sure your company name
and info are visible, use a mascot such as a
clown or animal character if you have one,
keep mentioning your company name, hi, I'm
so and so from xzc bounce, etc. Tell
everyone and tell them often. Make
sure your marketing materials get delivered.
Even children will remember your company if
they hear it enough.
Kindergarten
graduations. I love these.
Perfect age. This is what we do. We
get together with the schools and we offer
them goodie bags for the graduating class.
You can buy pre-packaged bags or make your
own. We use a goodie bag that is
colorful on the outside, no company name so
its not that obvious, and inside we put a
card, fridge magnet, a congratulations card,
and some small toys and candies. Kids take
the magnet, and guess what, it goes on the
fridge where it stays awhile. We have
had great success with this.

| Bio-hazards |
|
Dereck Scheppelmann, partner in Boomerang
Amusements was the first company in Michigan to offer
specialized cleaning services through his former company
"Fatality Clean Up". Dereck offers his professional advice
in the clean up of bio hazard materials that may be in or on
your equipment. The most common items being, vomit,
urine/feces and blood. And keep in mind this may be as
simple as a drop or two, a band-aid, or worse.
There are many solutions with which to clean
these materials with, and many can be dangerous to skin
contact during and after clean up. Check you products you
choose carefully and make sure they kill all germs,
bacteria, and the HIV virus as well. A simple solution of of
bleach and water will do the trick efficiently if properly
applied. The solution should be no less than 10 percent
bleach which is recognized world wide as sufficient to kill
these harmful agents. 20 percent is recommended as the
maximum for our equipment.
The first thing is to make sure you wear
appropriate universal precautions. This includes latex or
latex free gloves, eye protection, and even a nose and mouth
mask similar to those used in hospitals. You should have no
open wounds, breaks in your skin, etc.. If so, these should
be covered. You will need ample clean rags, the solution,
and a couple of garbage bags. Preferably a small garbage
can so you do not have to handle the bag with contaminated
gloves when placing materials inside.
The first step after donning your protective
wear is to use a clean rag and wipe up as much of the
material as possible. Then throw away the rag. Never
re-use them in any cleaning step. Spray an ample amount of
the solution, or apply it with a dampened rag, not soaking,
and wipe the immediate area. Throw this rag away. With
another rag, slightly expand the cleaning area. Expand the
area once again with a third rag and cleaning solution.
This should be the only incident in which bleach makes
contact with your thread. Blood and other substances may
leave stains, just be aware that if properly cleaned they
will not be hazardous.
Next, you should seal the garbage bag and
then place it inside another garbage bag along with your
protective gear which you should dispose of in accordance
with local or state laws. In many cases such as the small
amounts you'll see, the household garbage may suffice. Some
localities may require the material be placed in a special
container and taken to a specialized dump area. Check just
to be on the safe side.
After you have finished cleaning, wash your
hands a minimum of 15 seconds, rubbing vigorously with an
anti-bacterial soap. You may also follow this up with a
alcohol based hand lotion/cleaner for added assurance. Make
sure any clothing that came in contact with this material is
thoroughly cleaned as well in a similar solution. Do not
take your personal health for granted. Your health is worth
more than any equipment you own.

Tear Aid
Got a small hole in a unit? How about a 3 inch cut? Seam
separating a little bit and you need to stop it from splitting?
Time to get out the glue, vinyl and scissors and get ready to patch that
unit. But wait, what if there is an easier way? Well,
actually there is. Many companies have been using tear-aid which
is a flexible, clear tape designed to repair vinyl. Tear-aid type
B was made just for us. We got a piece of this a couple years back
in our "Repair Kit". Never used it until recently and let me tell
you its great stuff.
We had a 3 inch tear on the bottom of one of our units, we slapped on a
tear aid patch in no time and its held up just fine for over 30 rentals
and even in wet weather. No need for expensive repairs. As
we went over our units and found small holes, we applied a small piece
to prevent them from getting any bigger. Best of all because its
thin yet strong, and clear, it blends perfectly. No need to try
and match the color of the vinyl.
I'd suggest picking up a roll from their web site or an authorized
vendor. They can be found at
